Artist: Fellix Bonfils (1831-1885)

Original collodion glass negative

Historical document, as it is a unique original negative of this temple, which has since been moved.

Signed "Bonfils" and numbered "190" in the lower left corner.

View of the Temple of Philae, Nubia, circa 1867

Retouched in the sky using a finely cut paper mask for the crenellations.

This is the Temple of Isis at Philae. One can make out the large colonnades with their varied capitals and the pillars topped with the face of the goddess Hathor

Felix Bonfils was a French photographer (1831–1885). He learned photography from Niepce de Saint-Victor, the nephew of Nicéphore Niepce.

He opened his photography studio in 1867 in Beirut, Lebanon, where he specialized in architecture and landscapes of Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and Greece.
