AQUATINT
Aquatint is a technique that allows for the creation of solid areas of color on the copper plate using a resin powder coating. It is this resin-coated area that, once melted, will retain the ink and allow for the creation of different shades of color depending on how long the acid etches the plate.
This particularly sophisticated technique enabled engravers of the 18th and 19th centuries to produce prints with tonal ranges similar to the paintings of the time.
