Decorative American Silver Shuttle Cup, Ball, Black & Co., Ny, Amours, 19th Century
A solid silver navette-shaped bowl signed by the famous American firm Ball, Black & Co.* in New York, dating from the 19th century. It rests on a pedestal supported by four stylized legs. The handles feature charming cherubs (putti) in the round, appearing to hang delicately from branches laden with flowers that follow the contours of the bowl.
The interior is accented with vermeil. The body of the cup bears fine initials engraved in the English style: “FAR to MMG,” evidence of its intended use as a ceremonial gift.
* It is signed by the famous American firm Ball, Black & Co. in New York, one of the most eminent silversmiths and jewelers of the 19th century in the United States. The company evolved from Marquand & Co. (founded around 1810), which later became Ball, Tompkins & Black in 1839. It became Ball, Black & Co. in 1851, led by partners Henry Ball, William D. Black, and Ebenezer Moore. It established itself as one of the leading national houses for jewelry and luxury silverware in the United States. Their creations—shaped pieces, cutlery, bowls, pitchers, and jewelry—are now housed in major museums such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as in the collections of antique dealers.
This bowl is in very good condition, with remarkable quality and finesse of engraving.
