An important work by the renowned Ghent-born Belgian
sculptor Leon Sarteel (1882–1942).
Created in 1924, with some early studies dating back to
1922, the Monument of Cooperation is a remarkable example of Sarteel’s artistic
vision and sculptural craftsmanship.
The original monument was an impressive 3.20-metre-tall
plaster sculpture, conceived on a monumental scale.
In June 1924, the work was presented at the International
Cooperative Exhibition (E.I.C.O.S.), held at the Feestpaleis in Ghent’s Citadel
Park. This significant cultural event celebrated the ideals of the cooperative
movement and commemorated the 50th anniversary of Edward Anseele.
Following its presentation, smaller versions of the
monument were produced in both plaster and bronze. These reduced-scale editions
found their way into collections around the world.
Today, the Monument of Cooperation remains a compelling
testament to Leon Sarteel’s sculptural legacy and an evocative reflection of
the social and artistic ideals of early 20th-century Belgium.
