Painted Bark, Primitive Art, Oceanic Art, Tribal Art, Bark Painting, 63 Cm
Painted bark collected in the Washkuk hills area in Papua New Guinea. These paintings on sago palm bark decorate the inner surfaces of the roofs as well as the gables of ceremonial houses and depict, in abstract or figurative ways, the ancestors or beliefs of the clans. Joined together, they line the ceilings or gables of these large, prestigious huts. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York features in its permanent collection a complete reconstruction of a house roof decorated with painted bark panels of this type. Piece of sago palm bark and natural pigments. Signs of wear. A pedestal is available upon request. Approx. 63 x 33 cm, €170 including shipping.
