Description

An impressive mid-to-late 20th-century natural ruby and diamond dress ring, finely constructed in substantial 18-karat white gold and centred by an exceptionally large oval cabochon ruby.

The principal stone is a natural oval cabochon-cut ruby weighing approximately 14.16 carats, measuring approximately 21 x 13 x 5 mm. Its generous proportions and smooth domed surface give the jewel considerable presence on the hand.

The ruby is secured at four corners by substantial double-claw settings. Following the curved outline of the central stone are eight individually claw-set old-cut diamonds, four to either side. The diamonds comprise four stones estimated at approximately 0.025 carat each and four at approximately 0.10 carat each, giving an estimated total diamond weight of 0.50 carat.

Particularly attractive is the ring’s construction. The principal setting is raised above an open-work wire basket, allowing light to enter beneath the ruby. Four structural bars descend from the gallery and merge elegantly into the substantial polished white-gold shank.

The combination of the unusually large cabochon ruby, antique-cut diamonds and architectural white-gold mounting creates a striking jewel with a distinctly glamorous mid-century character.

The ring is unmarked; the white gold has been tested as 18 carat.
