Jean Segalat (1926–1987), Painter From Decazeville, Aveyron; Charcoal Drawing
dimensions with frame: 58 cm by 38 cm
Jean Ségalat was born on October 6, 1926, in Decazeville, in the Aveyron department. As a student at the Institut Sainte-Marie in Rodez, he showed artistic talent that was encouraged by his teacher, Roger Serpantié. In 1943, at the age of 17, he exhibited a series of caricatures in his hometown.
In 1945, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, but, disappointed by the academic approach, he left the school in 1947 to return to Aveyron to work in solitude and introspection. That year, he attended an exhibition by his classmate Bernard Buffet at the Galerie Saint-Placide, where Buffet received the Critics’ Prize. Deeply moved by this expressionist work, he decided to steer his art toward expressive realism.
