Medi HOLTROP(Oslo, 1943)"Jeg elsker meg selv som min nest.circa 2005-2010
Graphite pencil / charcoal on paperSigned "Medi" lower right
Handwritten inscription at top: "Jeg elsker meg selv som min nest." (Norwegian)
Dimensions of drawing : 42 × 29.6 cm
Dimensions with frame: 47.5 × 35.5 cm
Description
Magnificent pencil drawing of rare psychological intensity.
Two elderly female figures embrace in a gesture of overwhelming tenderness and almost sculptural strength. One, with eyes closed, rests her head on the other's shoulder in total abandon; the second, gazing straight ahead, expresses fierce vigilance and profound humanity.
The modeling of wrinkles, veins, clenched hands and hair is rendered with exceptional virtuosity, where every pencil stroke reveals flesh, emotion and the passage of time.
The Norwegian text at the top of the drawing - "Jeg elsker meg selv som min nest." - is a poetic and intimate variation on the commandment "Love thy neighbor as thyself".
It transforms the work into a powerful meditation on self-love, shared solitude and embrace as refuge.
Born in Oslo in 1943, Medi Holtrop studied at the Oslo Fine Arts School (1960-1965).
After a career teaching drawing and art history in Norway, she moved to France, where she has lived since the 1970s with designer Willem (Bernard Willem Holtrop).
Her graphic work, influenced by Edvard Munch and panic art, explores the body, female identity, melancholy and pleasure.
She is notably the author of the album Plaisir (2008), a series of 75 lead drawings that won her the Prix Grandville de l'Humour noir. Her drawings, both raw and highly sensitive, are exhibited in France, Norway and Belgium (Espace Accatone, Galleri Tonne, etc.).
ConditionExcellent condition. Paper slightly yellowed evenly, typical of works on paper from this period.
Mounting and framing neat and recent.
ProvenanceFrench private collection.Powerful and moving, this drawing is a fine example of Medi Holtrop's introspective, carnal universe. I
deal for a lover of contemporary figurative drawing, Norwegian art or graphic works of psychological intensity.
