Belgian Boch Delft Blue And White Floral Lidded Ginger Jar, Circa 1920

Artist: Boch Frères La Louvière

Description :

An elegant Belgian blue and white glazed earthenware lidded ginger jar, produced by Boch in the Delft tradition, dating to circa 1920.

This beautifully decorated piece features a generously rounded body resting on a circular foot, surmounted by a domed lid with a wide projecting rim. The lid is crowned by a charming sculptural finial representing a Chinese guardian lion, commonly known as a Foo Dog.

The exterior is richly decorated with intricate cobalt blue floral compositions against a contrasting white ground. Large shaped reserves display beautifully detailed chrysanthemums, peonies and flowering branches, surrounded by elaborate scrolling foliage, stylised blossoms and geometric motifs.

The combination of dense ornamental borders and delicate floral panels reflects the enduring influence of Chinese porcelain on European Delft-style ceramics.

The underside bears a decorative factory mark incorporating the name BOCH, the designation Delft, and the inscription Made in Belgium, identifying its Belgian manufacture.

The interior is finished with a pale, slightly greenish glaze, contrasting with the richly patterned exterior.

A decorative and substantial example of early 20th-century Belgian ceramic craftsmanship, equally attractive displayed individually or incorporated into a collection of European blue and white pottery.
