A Set Of Four Plates Made Of Polychrome Sarreguemines Earthenware, Featuring A Design By Froment Richard.

Artist: Froment Richard
– A trompe l’œil tray made of polychrome Sarreguemines earthenware, consisting of four interlocking plates with a
decor featuring three decorative vignettes depicting small trades: the cobbler, the potter and
porcelain mender, the public scribe, and the fourth featuring soap bubbles; a design created by the illustrator Antoine Albert Richard
(known as Froment Richard, born in Lyon on June 9, 1845, and died in Menton on January 3, 1921) for the Sarreguemines pottery factory.
– Froment Richard collaborated with the Sarreguemines earthenware factory around 1880, where he created designs featuring children and
humorous scenes from everyday life in the late 19th century.
– Two interlocking plates, “The Shoemaker” and “The Public Scribe,” are signed within the design with the monogram “F.R.” of the artist
and illustrator Froment Richard.
– The rim of the plates is decorated with a floral pattern; the pink color that highlights the rim and frames the medallions
within the floral pattern is enhanced with a brush and hand-painted.
– Listed and referred to as the “four-plate tray” in the catalog of the
Sarreguemines earthenware factory, this trompe-l’œil tray bears the form number 2176 and the letter U engraved into the clay on the back of the
tray.
– Signed in black with the Sarreguemines earthenware factory’s stamp, a printed mark consisting of the inscription
Sarreguemines in cursive script, overlaid with the letters U&C for Utzschneider & Company.
– This signature was used in the second half of the 19th century at the Sarreguemines earthenware factory.
– The back of the plate has two holes, allowing a hook to be attached for use as wall decor.
– Date: late 19th century to early 20th century, circa 1880–1910.
