Historical context: Leon of Salamis was an Athenian citizen of immense renown and a former general in the Peloponnesian War. In 404 B.C., the oligarchic regime of the Thirty Tyrants ordered Socrates and four other citizens to arrest Leon in Salamis and execute him illegally in order to confiscate his property. Socrates courageously refused to obey this unjust order and returned home, risking his life, while the other four complied and Leon was put to death.
