Emmanuel Bellini was born in Monaco on March 26, 1904, to a father who was a machinist, fitter, and international gymnast, and a mother who was an embroiderer. At age 15, in 1919, he enrolled at the Ecole Supérieure d’Arts Plastiques in Monaco. Since his family could not afford to support him through further art studies in Paris, Bellini began an apprenticeship with Charles Delmas, an architect, and worked for him for 8 years. Alongside his work, he created humorous drawings and caricatures for the press under the pen name “Mène.” He settled in Sainte-Maxime in 1929 and, among other projects, served as the construction architect for the Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
Self-taught, he began painting in 1948, encouraged by Cyril Constantin. After just one year of painting, he exhibited in Cannes in the lobby of the Compagnie Grosso and achieved immediate success. Praised by Louis Pastour and Jean-Gabriel Domergue, he gained recognition in France and abroad, notably in Paris at the Pétrides Gallery, where he exhibited from 1951 to 1976. In 1953, Emmanuel Bellini acquired a beautiful Baroque-inspired chapel, built in 1894 by Count Vitali, to serve as his studio. He worked tirelessly there and produced a great deal of art.
In 1972, Prince Rainier of Monaco hosted a retrospective of Emmanuel Bellini’s works at the Sporting d’Hiver. One hundred and fifty paintings were exhibited there, including his very first work, “Two Parakeets,” which had been brought back from New York for the occasion. For his 80th birthday, the Prince presented him with a new exhibition that served as an opportunity to showcase their shared passion: a series of works on the theme of the circus.
Following his death in 1989 in Cannes, the Emmanuel Bellini Prize is awarded each year at the Monaco International Circus Festival. Read less
