Vietnamese wooden storage box inlaid with mother-of-pearl – Late 19th century
Circular Vietnamese storage box made of wood and decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays, dating from the late 19th century.
The lid features a central floral composition surrounded by bouquets and motifs of symbolic objects accompanied by ribbons. Fine concentric bands structure the design, edged by a delicate plant frieze. Around the perimeter, birds among flowering branches alternate with inscriptions in Asian characters.
Finely engraved, the mother-of-pearl reveals pink, green, and silvery hues that shift with the light and stand out against the warm tones of the wood. Metal bands highlight the contours of the box, which retains its removable inner compartment.
A collectible object that captivates with the delicacy of its decoration and the shimmer of its inlays, bearing witness to the craftsmanship of late 19th-century Vietnamese artisans.
There are a few areas where the mother-of-pearl has lifted and some missing pieces. The box is sold as-is, as shown in the photographs.
