La Seynie Limoges Tea Set
Artist: Frères Paroutaud / Jane Devuy
Limoges porcelain. La Seynie Manufactory, the Paroutaud Brothers, Pierre & Paul (produced 1903–1919; Belle Époque period).
Four cups with saucers in the Neoclassical style (inspired by Louis XVI and the Empire periods); the cups, mounted on high pedestals, rest on a square base. Handles with geometric designs gilded with fine gold.
Rich polychrome decoration.
Each saucer features a symbolic central motif that varies from one saucer to the next. A winged cherub with a laurel wreath; on another saucer, this same cherub is depicted in mid-flight, holding a laurel garland; on a third, the same cherub blows a trumpet (Fame) to herald triumph.
Finally, on the fourth saucer is a slender woman in a flowing blue tunic, soaring through the air; she, too, wears a laurel wreath and garland.
These four central designs represent Love and the triumph of emotions.
They are set within a square frame and a laurel wreath outlined with a gold border.
This square, contrasting with the fluid movement of the central figures in flight, symbolizes stability, order, and balance in Love—an order brought about by marriage, which is here confirmed by the crossed ribbons and the knots of a union, an indissoluble bond. The laurel, present everywhere in the form of wreaths and garlands and associated with the angel and the cherub, evokes eternal love, while the crossed ribbons and bows symbolize the union of love and marriage in a poetic and allegorical vision.
These four cups and their saucers, in addition to being richly decorated, tell us a story of eternal love.
The omnipresence of the laurel will protect the couple and remind them of eternal love, fidelity, lasting happiness, and joy—joy and tenderness brought by the presence of angels.
Stamp visible under the base: “La Seynie Limoges P.P.”
Signed by Jane Devuy on the pieces; she was a porcelain painter of that period.
The decoration is delicate and beautiful. Elegant shape.
Saucer diameter: 14.5 cm
Cup height: 8 cm, square base: 4.5 cm
Condition: gilding and decoration in excellent condition; one hair on one cup and a micro-chip.
