édouard-marcel Sandoz – “little Monkey” Tobacco Jar Made Of Limoges Porcelain – Théodore Haviland
Limoges porcelain tobacco jar depicting a seated monkey, a design created in 1916 by the animal sculptor Édouard-Marcel Sandoz (1881–1971) for the Théodore Haviland factory.
The monkey is depicted in a crouched position, with its front legs tucked in and its long tail wrapped around the base. Its head, which serves as a removable lid, has a particularly mischievous expression, with large round eyes and protruding ears.
The decoration, rendered in shades of brown on a white background, highlights the different parts of the fur and emphasizes the quality of the modeling. This creation exemplifies the naturalistic, stylized, and humorous approach characteristic of Édouard-Marcel Sandoz’s animal sculptures.
