Pair Of Gilded, Carved Wooden Candlesticks From The Louis XIV Period
An important pair of tripod candlesticks in carved and gilded wood from the Louis XIV period, late 17th century, richly carved on all sides, resting on three claw-foot or lion-paw bases, topped with busts of winged women.
In a cartouche, a Eucharistic symbol—such as a chalice and a host—is depicted, and on the other two sides, an ornamental plant motif crowned by a cherub’s head.
The baluster shaft is generously adorned with gadroons, cascading leaves and garlands, carved figures, and large acanthus leaves.
Carved grooves and gadroons are present beneath the cup, which is topped by a wrought-iron spike.
Beautiful period gold leaf gilding; traces of old wood-boring insects (treated); restoration.
Height: 71.5 cm
81 cm with the spike, one of which is slightly taller.
