A. G. Descamps – The Card Players
Artist: A C Descamps
A charming 19th-century oil on canvas, signed A. G. Descamps and dated 1856 in the lower right corner.
This lovely genre scene depicts a card game in a rustic interior, bringing together several characters from different generations.
In the foreground, two men are playing cards, while a young boy dressed in blue, sitting on a table, appears to be taking part in the game. In the background, two women—one of whom is holding a young child—complete this lively family scene.
The artist pays particular attention to facial expressions, the figures’ postures, and the details of their costumes, in the tradition of 19th-century genre scenes.
The warm color palette and soft lighting lend the entire scene an intimate and cozy atmosphere.
The work is presented in an elegant gilded frame decorated with foliage friezes.
