Antonio De Molina was born around 1560 in Villanueva de los Infantes. In 1575, he entered the Order of the Hermits of St. Augustine; he was elected superior of one of their houses in Spain and taught theology for some time. However, wishing to join an order with stricter discipline, he became a Carthusian at Miraflores, where he died while serving as prior of the monastery. Antonio De Molina wrote several works on asceticism in Spanish, intended particularly for priests; they became the most popular books of their kind in Spain and were translated into several foreign languages. This book is his greatest success.
