Large Statue Of The Virgin Mary Carved From Fruitwood, Germany, 17th Century, 130 Cm

An impressive statue of the Virgin Mary carved from fruitwood, dating from the 17th century and originating in Germany; it is notable for its large size, elegant proportions, and expressive sculptural style.
The Virgin is depicted standing, with her arms outstretched and her palms open in a gesture of blessing and intercession. Her serene face is framed by long hair and a veil, while the deeply carved folds of her robe lend the entire figure a strong sense of movement and volume.
She rests on a carved crescent moon and cloud, an iconography traditionally associated with the Immaculate Conception and the Woman of the Apocalypse, a theme of particular importance in Central European Baroque religious sculpture.
Carved from fruitwood, the statue features a natural surface with warm tones and a beautiful antique patina. The absence of later polychromy allows one to fully appreciate the quality of the carving and the natural character of the wood.
Its monumental dimensions—approximately 130 cm in height—lend the work an imposing presence and suggest that it was originally intended for a religious setting, such as a church, a chapel, or a private oratory.
A remarkable and highly decorative example of 17th-century German Baroque religious sculpture, retaining the character and surface appearance characteristic of a work from this period.
