Small Solid Silver Tea Strainer – Henri Soufflot – Minerva Mark – 19th Century
Artist: Henri Soufflot
An elegant and distinctive solid silver tea strainer, crafted in Paris by silversmith Henri Soufflot (active 1884–1910). The piece bears the Minerva hallmark and Soufflot’s maker's mark, identifiable by the initials "HS" accompanied by a rising sun and a star. The strainer features a beautiful multi-lobed, flower-like shape, with the interior adorned by a finely wrought, radiating floral design comprising undulating stems, foliage, and a central motif. It rests on three small metal feet ending in ball terminals, giving it a particularly unique and decorative appearance. It is fitted with a turned wood handle, featuring a silver collar and decorative moldings. This piece is a fine example of decorative French silverwork, reflecting the late 19th-century taste for tableware that was both functional and refined. Note: The handle was previously reattached at the junction with the metal section; this repair is visible in the photographs. There are also some marks and signs of use consistent with the piece's age. Period: Late 19th century (1884–1910). Silversmith: Henri Soufflot – Paris. Hallmarks: Minerva (solid silver). Maker's mark: Henri Soufflot (HS, rising sun, and star). Materials: Solid silver and wood. Dimensions: Total length 16 cm; width 7 cm; height 4 cm.
