Pair of three-light wall sconces in mercury-gilded bronze – Empire period

A very elegant pair of Empire-period wall sconces, in finely chased and mercury-gilded bronze, Paris, early 19th century.

Exhibiting particularly meticulous craftsmanship, each features three light arms that radiate with great balance from a richly ornamented central body.

The design incorporates the full decorative vocabulary characteristic of the Empire style: palmettes, rosettes, foliage, scrolls, fleurons, and floral motifs are arranged around a large circular section adorned with a radiating pattern. This is accentuated by a prominent frieze of finely chiseled flowers, dominated at its center by a medallion featuring a stylized female head.

The three arms, supple and elegantly curved, terminate in large, finely decorated sconces and finials adorned with garlands and floral motifs. The side arms are embellished with small scrolls and rosettes that lighten the composition while maintaining the symmetrical rigor characteristic of the First Empire.

The upper and lower sections are extended by remarkable openwork elements featuring palmette, rosette, and foliage motifs, whose delicacy gives the wall sconces a particularly slender silhouette.

Remarkable Craftsmanship

The quality of these wall sconces is also evident in details that are usually invisible once they are installed.

For example, the mounting hardware on the back of the lamp arms is itself crafted and shaped into flowers—a detail that particularly highlights the care taken in their manufacture. Even the technical components have been given a truly decorative treatment here.

The back, fully visible in the photographs, retains a particularly interesting period construction, complete with its original mounts, screws, and assembly components.

On the back of one of the two wall sconces, there is also an old inscription or engraved mark, in which one can make out, in particular, a letter that appears to be a “B” or an “R.” This mark has yet to be deciphered and could correspond to a workshop mark, an assembly mark, or possibly a signature.

The antique mercury gilding, remarkably well-preserved, still displays beautiful contrasts between matte and burnished surfaces. It particularly highlights the depth of the chasing and the richness of the various motifs.

The set is in very good overall condition, with remarkably fresh gilding and a beautiful uniformity between the two sconces.

With their elegance, the exceptionally fine quality of their chiseling, the richness of their decoration—even in the hidden details—and the preservation of their original mercury gilding, this pair constitutes a very fine example of a Parisian Empire-period light fixture.
