Louis Cabié (1853–1939) Lalinde, Sunset Over The Dordogne In The Périgord
Artist: Louis-alexandre Cabié
Louis-Alexandre CABIÉ
(Dol-de-Bretagne 1853 – Bordeaux 1939)
Sunset in Lalinde
Oil on canvas
H. 50 cm; W. 61 cm
Signed lower left, dated 1913.
Provenance: Private collection, Paris
Louis Cabié, a renowned artist in France—and particularly in the Bordeaux region—even during his lifetime, traveled throughout the greater southwest throughout his life. A student of Harpignies, whose passion for vegetation in the style of the Barbizon School is evident in his work, he continued to capture the simplicity of picturesque French landscapes until his death. Spectacular trees, forest scenes, places steeped in history, enchanting valleys, or even a landscape in its most unadorned state—he knew how to bring out its vital contrast.
Even before his remarriage in 1894 in Les Eyzies, Louis Cabié was already exploring the Périgord. In 1892, he donated a large-scale view of Lalinde at sunset to the Cognac Museum. Sublime light and an atmosphere that evokes the essence of the Périgord—all captured in a painting created that very same year. He would revisit this view every ten years. In 1903, he presented an even larger landscape (150 x 200 cm) at the Paris Salon, featuring a more overcast sky and painted the previous fall. It would serve as the basis for our composition, which was itself created eleven years later, in 1913.
In 1920, he revisited his first composition from 1892 in a format similar to ours.
It should be noted that the very large canvas from 1902 was acquired in 1907 by the city of Laval, where it is still housed at the Musée du Vieux Château.
We are seeking any works or information related to the artist to complete his biography as well as a catalog raisonné currently being compiled.
