Large Signed Watercolor – Religious Procession And Crowd In Front Of A Cathedral – 20th Century
Large signed watercolor – Religious procession and crowd in front of a cathedral – 20th century
A beautiful and significant watercolor on paper, depicting a spectacular religious procession or folk festival, brought to life by a large crowd gathered in front of an imposing religious architectural complex.
The particularly lively composition features numerous figures: clergy, pilgrims, and participants carrying banners and standards, some adorned with religious symbols.
In the foreground, the figures are rendered with great expressiveness, while in the background the cathedral’s various towers and domes stand out.
The artist employs a subtle palette dominated by greens, yellows, ochres, and blues, enhanced by very freehand ink or pencil drawing.
The rapid rendering of the silhouettes, the clustering of figures, and the large areas left unpainted lend the composition a great deal of movement and spontaneity.
The work is signed in the lower right corner. The signature is clearly visible in the photographs but has yet to be identified
