Portrait Of Marie-anne Christine Victoire Of Bavaria
Portrait of Marie-Anne-Christine-Victoire of Bavaria, the Grand Dauphine (1660–1690).
French School, late 17th century — Studio of Pierre Mignard (1612–1695)
A very beautiful half-length portrait of Marie-Anne-Christine-Victoire of Bavaria, known as the Grande Dauphine, wife of Louis of France, known as the Grand Dauphin, son of Louis XIV.
The princess is depicted wearing an elegant court gown in shades of white, pink, and silver, covered by a flowing blue cloak; her brown hair is pulled up and adorned with a blue ribbon.
The face, rendered with finesse and delicacy, corresponds to the iconographic style characteristic of portraits of the Grande Dauphine produced in the circle of Pierre Mignard, one of the great portraitists of Louis XIV’s court.
Oil on canvas, set in a remarkable period carved and gilded wooden frame, richly decorated with foliage, shells, and floral motifs.
A work of great decorative and historical significance, particularly interesting for its subject—a princess of the House of Bavaria who became the Dauphine of France.
