Painting, Oil On Canvas, “the Sacrifice Of The Lamb,” Neoclassical (late 18th Century)

Painting, oil on canvas, “The Sacrifice of the Lamb,” Neoclassical (late 18th century)

A fine oil painting on canvas depicting “The Sacrifice of the Lamb,” a biblical scene rendered in a style clearly rooted in classicism and academic tradition.

The figure of the lamb is a biblical symbol referring to Jesus. Just as in the Old Covenant the sacrifice of the lamb was offered as atonement for sins, so in the New Covenant Jesus, the Lamb of God, takes away the sins of the world through his death.

The composition features a female figure at the center, wrapped in a large blue cloak, standing next to a kneeling young man, while from above a celestial figure intervenes in the scene, towering over the sacrifice of the lamb placed on the altar.

The group is rendered with a marked sense of drama, through expressive gestures, sweeping drapery, and a carefully balanced alternation of warm and cool colors.

Of particular interest is the figure of the angel, dynamically positioned in the upper part of the composition, and the strong contrast between the luminosity of the figures and the shadier landscape background.

The work reflects a taste for sacred painting of a historical and academic nature, featuring a solemn and dramatic composition, likely intended for a ceremonial or devotional setting.

It is in excellent condition.

The painting is set in an elegant gilded wooden frame from the 20th century.
