Animal Bronze Sculpture, Horse, Jean Joire
Artist: Jean Joire (1862-1950)
Jean Joire (1862–1950): The Attentive Horse
Bronze with a brown patina, antique cast, signed on the base
with the Brussels foundry’s mark on the underside.
Born into a family of bankers in northern France, Jean Joire initially worked in banking before devoting himself entirely to sculpture. He opened a sculpture school in Lille in collaboration with the sculptor Jacques Merculiano (1859–1935). Joire sculpted almost exclusively horses: racehorses, draft horses, carriage horses, circus horses… Working in a highly masterful classical style, he produced a small number of bronzes of exceptional quality. His studio collection appears to have been destroyed, and almost nothing remains of his history and work in the family archives. The majority of his work has yet to be located. La tribune de l'Art
