An abstracted still life by Francine Chimène (1929–2019), a French woman painter who lived and worked in Chatou, on the banks of the Seine, a town historically associated with the Impressionists and the Île des Impressionnistes, home to the celebrated Maison Fournaise.
Some online sources give 1933 as her year of birth, but documentary evidence connected with her death indicates that 1929 is the correct date.
In The Coffee Pot, the objects remain recognizable but are simplified into broad planes of color, balancing post-war figuration and abstraction. This progressive move toward abstraction became especially evident in the later phase of her work.
Her daughter, Marion Dillange (1963–2020), was also a painter, with a practice strongly oriented toward abstraction, painting and collage. An artistic dialogue between mother and daughter is plausible, although a direct influence has not yet been documented.
The work comes from the artist’s heirs, is on its original canvas, signed on the front and titled on the reverse. Good condition consistent with age.
