Polychrome And Gilded Carved Wooden Figure Of A Child—17th-century Angel, Haute époque 17th
A polychrome wooden sculpture depicting a youthful figure seated on a mound, holding a large, fragmentary scroll (phylactery or cornucopia), with his right hand drawn across his chest in an expressive gesture of devotion. The flat, roughly hewn back suggests that this figure originally adorned an architectural element or an altarpiece.
Baroque period, 17th century.
Dimensions: height 47 cm.
This sculpture retains beautiful remnants of its original polychromy and gilding on the lower drapery. The piece shows signs of wear and tear, significant losses in the polychromy, and traces of wood-boring insects; it has not been treated. It should also be noted that an old fracture at the neck has been repaired. It has a lovely patina reminiscent of a castle attic. A base or support is recommended for optimal stability.
