16th-century Italian School – Polychrome Terracotta Bas-relief – Diorama
A remarkable polychrome terracotta bas-relief from the 16th-century Italian school, set within a deep box frame that forms an evocative diorama.
The composition, which is particularly intricate and richly modeled, depicts a scene set in a wooded landscape. At the center is a male figure, accompanied by two children and a lion, beneath an imposing tree rendered in high relief.
The depth of the modeling, the overlapping of different planes, and the sculptural treatment of the landscape lend the work a remarkable, almost theatrical sense of perspective.
The terracotta retains traces of ancient polychromy, particularly visible in the drapery and the figures, which contribute to the work’s charm and historical character.
The bas-relief is set within a deep antique wooden frame, decorated with rows of pearls and designed as a true perspective box.
A rare work of great decorative impact, it is an interesting example of Italian sculptural production from the Renaissance period.
