Carved Walnut English Armchair / Queen Anne Period / Early George I / Circa 1710–1720
ENGLISH ARMCHAIR IN CARVED WALNUT QUEEN ANNE PERIOD EARLY GEORGE I, CIRCA 1710–1720
An elegant and rare English armchair in carved walnut, dating from the early 18th century, which we date to around 1710–1720, at the transition between the Queen Anne period and the early years of George I’s reign.
This chair is distinguished by the great finesse of its construction and the unusual slenderness of its proportions, which give it a particularly elegant and airy silhouette.
The highly decorative, openwork high back features two sinuous, carved central posts, framed by posts with strongly undulating lines. It is crowned by a substantial carved composition combining shells, volutes, and foliage, in a decorative style characteristic of early 18th-century English furniture. The armrests, which are particularly slender and elegantly curved, are fitted with cuffs and rest on richly carved, dynamically shaped supports.
The seat’s apron also features a beautiful carved decoration of shells and foliage motifs.
The lower section is particularly remarkable. The slender, curved legs are joined by a rare and elegant X-shaped crossbar, which is remarkably light. This crossbar consists of four very slender arms, each tracing a double curve and converging on a small central hub. This very airy crossbar contributes significantly to the originality and elegance of the piece as a whole.
The seat and armrests are upholstered and covered with a damask fabric featuring a floral pattern in shades of red and gold.
The traditional joinery, the patina, and the appearance of the wood in the hidden parts are consistent with the chair’s age.
The upholstery and straps were reupholstered at a later date. There are some signs of wear and previous restorations, consistent with its age.
With its unique openwork backrest, the quality of its carving, the slender proportions, and above all the remarkable delicacy of its X-shaped brace, this armchair is a very interesting example of early 18th-century English furniture, still influenced by certain late 17th-century traditions while foreshadowing the elegance of Georgian furniture.
