Pair Of Lacquered Wooden Panels With Shibayama Marquetry Depicting Figures From Meiji-era Japan, 19th Century

Pair of large Japanese decorative panels made of lacquered wood with Shibayama-style marquetry (that is, inlays of carved and polished bone pieces, sometimes stained or painted) depicting figures accompanied by children in landscapes of cherry blossom branches with birds and small butterflies. From the Meiji period (1868–1912), 19th century.

One of the panels depicts bamboo shoot gatherers: the man holds a pickaxe in his hand and carries a bundle of shoots he has already gathered, while his young assistant carries a small basket for the tiniest shoots. The other panel depicts a hunter with his rifle and, most likely, a pheasant at his belt; the young boy holds a long pole with a young bird at the end.

Both panels are signed with a square inlay on a red background bearing the artist’s name.

These panels are in good overall condition. They are very decorative due to their large size (92 cm high).

Please note: there are numerous chips and missing pieces in the marquetry (particularly on the branches); please examine the photos and the red arrows carefully. The lacquered background is slightly scratched, dirty, and worn in places.
