Russian Easter Egg Made Of Solid Silver, 84 Zolotniki – Pyotr Evstratovich Abrossimov, Moscow, 19th Century

Antique Russian Easter egg made of solid silver, oval in shape, opening into two parts, and entirely gilded on the inside.
The exterior is adorned with a finely engraved design of flowers, long grasses, foliage, and birds in flight, rendered in the naturalistic style characteristic of late 19th-century Russian craftsmanship.
On one side is the inscription in Old Cyrillic, “Христосъ Воскресе!”, which can be translated as “Christ is Risen!”, a traditional phrase from the Orthodox liturgy used during Easter celebrations.
The presence of the final hard sign “ъ” corresponds to Russian spelling prior to the 1918 reform.

The object bears the Russian hallmark 84 zolotniki, corresponding to a fineness of approximately 875 parts per thousand silver, as well as a rectangular hallmark with the Cyrillic initials “ПА.” This hallmark is listed as that of Pyotr Evstratovich Abrossimov (Пётр Евстратович Абросимов), a goldsmith and silverware manufacturer based in Moscow from 1869 to 1908.

6 cm high.

Very good condition.

Piotr Abrossimov was a merchant and owner of a Moscow silversmithing factory founded in 1869. His business grew significantly: it employed 45 workers in 1887 and about 60 in 1894, and that same year its production of small silver objects was valued at 60,000 rubles. His mark is found in particular on cups, boxes, cases, glass holders, and other small silverware pieces. Items bearing his “ПА” hallmark are notably found in the collections of the Moscow State Historical Museum. art-picture.ru

This egg belongs to the Russian tradition of Easter gifts, which flourished particularly in the 19th century, as the egg is a symbol of Resurrection and renewal in Orthodox culture.
