JeanCHOREL was born on Thursday, January 28, 1875, at 12 Rue Cuvier in Lyon, in thehome of Charles, known as Louis CHOREL, and Julie JUILLET. His father was a dyer;his mother, at the time of his birth, was a homemaker.Atage 17, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, admitted to theCharles DUFRAINE (1827–1900), and later to that of the sculptor andmedalist Pierre DEVAUX (1865–1938).
There, herefined his art in the studio of Louis Ernest BARRIAS (1841–1905), then in thatof Jules COUTAN (1848–1939), while developing his talents as a painter. Beginning in1903, his works stood out as much at the Lyon Salons as at the Salons desArtistes Français, where he received numerous awards. Uponreturning from his training in Paris, Jean CHOREL chose to settle inVilleurbanne. On January 21, 1905, he married Jeanne MIGEAT. After a brief returnto Lyon in 1910, the couple eventually settled permanently in Villeurbanne.Aprolific artist, he left an indelible mark on the Lyon landscape throughprestigious commissions. Among his most memorable works is an equestrian statue of Joanof Arc, unveiled at Place Puvis-de-Chavannes in November 1928 incommemoration of World War I; a moving Pietà(1926), housed in the Chapel of the Souls in Purgatory at the Basilicaof Notre-Dame de Fourvière; and numerous war memorials, testaments to histalent in the service of collective memory.Asquare is dedicated to him in the Tonkin neighborhood of Villeurbanne.
