18th-century antique armchair in the Louis XVI style, bearing the Jean Avisse (1723–1796) maker’s mark.
Known as a “bergère” style, in need of reupholstering.
The backrest is shaped like a gendarme’s hat, with fluted, serrated legs.
Period paint in two shades of light gray, worn by time and use.
Jean Avisse was a Parisian cabinetmaker who became a master joiner in 1745. He came from a family of chair makers. He set up shop on Rue de Clery, where he quickly gained a strong reputation thanks to the quality of his work. He was assisted in his business by his wife, Marie-Anne Gourdin, who also came from a renowned family of cabinetmakers. He crafted numerous remarkable pieces in the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. Archival records reveal that he employed highly renowned sculptors such as Pierre Rousseau, Claude Vinache, and Nicolas Heurtaut to work on his luxury chairs.
Many of his chairs are now on display in museums around the world.
