"bacchus" Nevers Bowl, 18th Century
Artist: Faïencerie De Nevers
Large dish, 38 cm in diameter, made of Nevers earthenware from the early 18th century. This round bowl with a scalloped rim features a polychrome depiction of Bacchus seated on a wooden barrel topped with a crown of grapes, holding a wine bottle in one hand and a stemmed glass in the other. The scene is surrounded by grapevines, with a wide border of crisscrossed patterns imitating wickerwork. This is a rare design among the works produced by the Nevers workshops. Note an old chip beneath the border and a crack stabilized with staples. This piece is signed on the reverse. On the back, there is a hanging mechanism for display.
