Napoleon III Bracelet In Gold, Blue And White Enamel, Fine Pearls, And Diamonds – Circa 1860–1870
A remarkable clasp bracelet from the Napoleon III era, crafted in 750/°° yellow gold (18 KT, hallmark eagle head) entirely chased and embellished with deep blue and white enamel, fine pearls, and rose-cut diamonds.
The upper section features a rich openwork design composed of interlacing and coiling motifs forming a true braid, whose sinuous lines intersect and wind around the central motif. The design is accentuated by a delicate blue and white enamel decoration, whose contrast with the yellow gold lends the bracelet a particularly precious character.
In the center, several generously sized fine pearls are arranged in a floral pattern and punctuated with rose-cut diamonds. The pearls display the nuances, luster, and subtle variations in hue characteristic of vintage natural pearls. The soft pearlescent sheen of the pearls and the understated brilliance of the diamonds contrast elegantly with the intense blue of the enamel.
The entire setting bears witness to exceptionally meticulous craftsmanship. The gold surfaces are richly engraved with foliage and plant motifs, extending even to the sides of the bracelet. This decoration complements the composition’s contours and evokes, in particular, acanthus leaves and Neo-Renaissance ornaments that were particularly popular in the decorative arts and jewelry during the Second Empire.
This combination of chiseled gold, scrollwork, colored enamels, fine pearls, and rose-cut diamonds is entirely in keeping with the style of French jewelry from the mid- to late 19th century. It illustrates the taste of the Napoleon III era for richly crafted jewelry, combining historical references, botanical motifs, and polychromy.
The bracelet’s construction also deserves special mention. Although it appears to be a rigid bracelet when worn, its frame features four articulation points, allowing the various sections to flexibly follow the curve of the wrist. This particularly elaborate mechanical design contributes to both the comfort and elegance of the piece when worn.
The clasp is another remarkable feature: it is extended by an ingenious telescoping sliding system, with one element sliding inside the other. Several locking notches allow the bracelet to be adjusted to five different positions, ensuring a precise fit around the wrist.
In a particularly refined detail, the inner sliding section is itself entirely chiseled, continuing the pattern that adorns the rest of the bracelet. Thus, regardless of the selected adjustment position and the portion of the mechanism left visible, the pattern remains continuous. The clasp thus blends visually into the case and becomes virtually imperceptible once the bracelet is worn. This attention to detail, extended even to the functional parts, attests to the exceptionally meticulous craftsmanship of this piece of jewelry.
The bracelet has come down to us in a particularly fine state of preservation. The blue and white enamel, in particular, is intact with no chips or chips, a quality all the more remarkable on a 19th-century piece of jewelry featuring numerous enameled surfaces and several joints.
A highly ornate Napoleon III bracelet, combining goldsmithing, engraving, enameling, fine pearls, and diamonds in a single piece, to which the sophistication of its hinged construction and adjustment mechanism lends additional appeal.
