Finely Forged Iron Door Handle, Austria? 18th–19th Century
Artist: Art Populaire
A fine small wrought-iron door
handle of oval form.
The spindle, intended to be screwed into door, is decorated with an engraved flower.
The handle features two engraved discs framed by four scrolls.
Decoration is engraved on one face, while reverse is polished.
The relatively abundant literature devoted to this elegant type of ironwork suggests various geographical attributions, including Austria, Northern Italy and Germany, for these delicate works sometimes described as “iron lace”.
The Austrian attribution seems correct.
Dimensions: 9.5 × 8.5 cm; projection from the door: 4 cm.
Condition: good overall condition, with no notable flaws.
