The artist:
Luiz Ferreira (1909–1994) was a renowned Portuguese goldsmith, born in Porto into a family of goldsmiths. He began his career in the 1930s working alongside his father, David Ferreira, before gradually developing his own style.
He is best known for his silver animal sculptures, nicknamed the “Bichos de Luiz Ferreira”: birds, dogs, horses, fish, insects, and other animals, often combined with materials such as wood, ivory, stones, or minerals.
Starting in the 1960s, his famous “LF” hallmark became characteristic of his most creative period. In 1970, he opened a shop on Rua Trindade Coelho in Porto, which became one of the places associated with his artistic and commercial activities.
His work gained international renown, and his creations are sought after by collectors. He died in Porto in 1994. Even today, his pieces regularly appear at auctions and are considered significant in the history of 20th-century Portuguese goldsmithing.
