Herod's Banquet - Frans Francken And His Workshop - 17th Century

Salome at Herod's Banquet.A work from the Flemish school attributed to Frans Francken and his workshop (Antwerp, 1581–1642), whooften depicted biblical themes, particularly the great banquets in history (the Feast of Belshazzar, Esther, Herod, Lazarus...)

The account in the Gospel according to Mark describes Herod holding a banquet for his high officials and military commanders, as well as high-ranking men from Galilee. During this banquet, the dazzling Salome dances before him. He is delighted and captivatedand offers her anything she asks for in return. The young girl asks hermother what she should ask for. Her mother treacherously suggests that she demand the head of John the Baptist. Reluctantly, Herod orders John’s beheading. His head, depicted here as a holy figure, will be delivered to Salome, at her request, “on a platter”;
