Portrait of a Puppy, Painting, pastel on paper by U. Coromaldi, made in Italy in the early 20th century
Umberto Coromaldi was born in Rome on September 21, 1870, to Vincenzo and Luisa Celli. Shortly after his birth, his father died, and his mother remarried the painter Filippo Indoni, who introduced Umberto to painting. He attended the Institute of Fine Arts, where Filippo Prosperi was his drawing instructor. He completed his training by studying under Antonio Piccinni and Antonio Mancini.
In 1893, he participated in the exhibition of the Society of Amateurs and Lovers of Fine Arts in Rome, and the following year he won the art scholarship with his painting *Ritorno dei naufragi* (Return of the Shipwrecked). Thanks to the prize, he was able to travel: he stayed and exhibited in Paris, Brussels, Antwerp, Munich, and Stuttgart
Upon returning to Rome, he regularly participated in the annual exhibitions of the Society of Amateurs and Connoisseurs, of which he became a member. The Society of Art Lovers and Connoisseurs dedicated several solo exhibitions to him.
In 1909, Umberto Coromaldi succeeded his teacher F. Prosperi as the instructor of figure drawing at the Institute of Fine Arts. He served as a painting instructor to the royal family, and in 1911 he painted a portrait of King Victor Emmanuel.[2] He was president of the Academy of San Luca in Rome and a member of the academies of Brera and Parma.
