Watercolor Etching: A Review Of The *quintidi* By Napoleon Bonaparte, First Consul, In A Gilded Wooden Frame
Etching of Napoleon Bonaparte, First Consul of the French Republic, based on Boilly’s portrait from 1801–1802. This engraving is titled "Revue du Quintidi"; beneath the portrait of the First Consul, a large military review is taking place in the courtyard of the Tuileries Palace, with the Louvre visible in the background. ("Revue du Quintidi" on the 5th day of the week at the Tuileries Palace, on the 29th of Thermidor, Year X (August 17, 1802).
Louis Leopold Boilly became known during the Empire for his highly precise, almost caricature-like portraits that revealed the character and soul of the person depicted. This portrayal of the First Consul presents him as melancholic, far from the image we know from official paintings, but likely very close to reality.
Very good condition; the colors are fresh with a few spots of foxing; period gilded wood frame, restored and cleaned by our gilder.
Width: 62 cm
Height: 73 cm
