About Hippolyte Madeline A watercolorist who depicted old Rouen and the towns of Burgundy, this employee of the Western Railway Company dreamed of traveling to distant lands. He spent a few months in Argentina and, in 1936, set sail for Tahiti. The lush vegetation of the majestic island permeates his works; palm trees, cordyline palms, and flamboyant trees stand out brilliantly against the black volcanic ash. An “exotic” and untamed beauty, imbued with an otherworldly quality that fascinates and invites the imagination. Upon his return to Rouen, this seasoned traveler became a watercolor instructor and created numerous views of the city.
