Verlys Vase with Bacchantes A frieze of figures and vine leaves

This Art Deco vase from the French glassworks Verlys combines figurative decoration with nuanced glasswork on the surface. Beneath the slightly flared rim, a frieze of female figures, vine leaves, and bunches of grapes unfolds.

The figures, modeled in relief, stand out against the satin-finished background. The alternation of transparent and frosted sections alters the depth of the decoration depending on the light. The faceted base provides a geometric conclusion to the composition.

This combination of sculptural relief, plant motifs, and structured lines gives the vase its Art Deco character.

France, circa 1930. Colorless pressed glass, partially satin-finished.
