Brantôme, Memoirs On Duels, Leiden, 1722

BRANTÔME (Pierre de Bourdeille, Seigneur de). *Mémoires contenant les Anecdotes de la Cour de France, sous les rois Henri II, François II, Henri III et Henri IV, touchant les duels*. Leiden, Jean Sambix the Younger, 1722. Small 12mo, brown calf; spine with raised bands and gilt floral ornaments. "Sphere" edition. This volume devoted to duels appeared more than fifty years after Brantôme's initial *Mémoires*, published in 1665–1666. "Jean Sambix" is a pseudonym used for editions associated with the 17th-century Elzevir publishing dynasty. This is believed to be the first edition of the text; the editor Ludovic Lalanne, in his scholarly edition of Brantôme's *Mémoires* (1864), writes: "This *Discours sur les duels* [Discourse on Duels], for which we have been unable to locate any manuscript, was printed for the first time in 1722, in Holland."
