Jacques Pellegrin is a renowned painter from Aix-en-Provence, born in 1944 in the land of Cézanne.
A painter of the “new free figuration” movement of the 1980s
An Aix native at heart, Aix was the city of his heart until the end of his life in 2021.
Born to parents who were painters and santon makers, he won first prize in the City of Aix painting competition twice, at ages 8 and 11.
At age 22, he held his first exhibition there, featuring some sixty works that were highly acclaimed. His style initially resembled the classical tradition. Then the painter discovered Impressionism, which would influence him well into the 1970s.Jacques Pellegrin is a self-taught painter.
His relentless exploration led him to discover German Expressionism as well as Fauvism and its masters, Matisse and Chabaud.He developed a deep admiration for French Expressionism—particularly Van Gogh, Derain, Marquet, and Von Dongen—as well as for the Provençal and Marseillais schools, represented by artists such as Verdilhan and Ambrogiani.
An epicurean, Jacques Pellegrin perfectly captures, through canvases reminiscent of Art Deco, the atmosphere and Provençal way of life. At times caustic, at times caricatural, he takes risks, even at the risk of occasionally shocking the puritanical.All his artistic passions are accompanied by a genuine love of life, celebration, and people.
As for colors, of course, his palette ranges from warm shades of blue and gray to bold, vibrant tones accented by black outlines.
