Mathurin Moreau, born in Dijon on November 18, 1822, and died in Paris on February 14, 1912, was a French sculptor renowned for his decorative works. The son of sculptor Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Joseph Moreau, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jules Ramet and Auguste Dumont. Winner of the Second Prix de Rome in 1842, he began exhibiting at the Salon in 1848. His works, notably *La Liseuse*, enjoyed great success during the Second Empire. As a collaborator with the Fonderie du Val, he also provided models to European companies. Mayor of Paris’s 19th arrondissement from 1879 until his death, he was named a Knight and later an Officer of the Legion of Honor. Avenue Mathurin-Moreau commemorates him today.
