The design on this French belt buckle plate (or counterplate), rendered in a highly stylized and abstract manner, can be interpreted either as ananthropomorphic face or as a zoomorphic composition incorporating bird motifs. The central vertical rib may evoke a nose or a beak, while the spiral elements and lateral curves suggest stylized birds in profile, with their heads turned toward the center.
