Portrait of a gentleman in armor, oil on canvas, late 17th-century French school, circa 1680–1700.

The subject is depicted in a half-length, three-quarter view, standing out against a dark background. The face, illuminated with restraint, is rendered with particular attention to the gaze and facial features. The restrained expression, the simplicity of the composition, and the model’s commanding presence are in keeping with the tradition of 17th-century French portraiture, particularly that of Philippe de Champaigne and his circle. He wears a long brown wig and a richly crafted cuirass. Around his neck is a white lace cravat, whose decoration contrasts with the dark metal of the armor.
The opulence of the ceremonial breastplate suggests that the subject is likely an officer or a gentleman of high—or even very high—rank, whom it may be possible to identify by reviewing engravings from the period. 
With its uncluttered background, the simplicity of the pose, and the emphasis placed on the individuality of the face, this portrait captures the spirit of mid-17th-century French portraiture, while also reflecting, through the wig and costume, the characteristics of the fashion of the final decades of Louis XIV’s reign.
