A student of the Neoclassical masters Jean-Baptiste Regnault and Merry-Joseph Blondel, Désirée-Charlotte Sauvageot-Galiot (active 1827–1850) exhibited regularly at the Paris Salons between 1827 and 1848, specializing in historical portraits and intimate genre scenes. The painting bears the mark of Ottoz Frères on the reverse, one of the most renowned Parisian suppliers of the 19th century.
