Born in Vienna in 1760, Franz Stöber was destined to become a goldsmith. His uncle recognized his talent as a painter and sent him to the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. There, he took courses in landscape and architectural painting taught by Johann Christian Brand. He produced numerous paintings, primarily landscapes and still lifes. He traveled to Switzerland and the Netherlands. He was entrusted with the supervision of the gallery by the Dean of Speyer, Baron von Hutten.
